This #SundaySupper is all about Dad, and dude food. As you can see by the posts below there’s lots of variety, it’s not all bacon! I actually wanted to make funnel cake with cider but I thought I would keep it stereotypical with beer. I did use Newcastle, however any beer will work.
So this recipe is very easy. The mixture of flour to beer is 1:1, so increase at will if you have a group of hungry men. The syrup is optional but pretty fab. You can omit it or use maple syrup. The beer isn’t really strong at all in the batter but it does give them a nice fluffy texture.

Beer Funnel Cake
Ingredients
- 2 bottles beer
- 1Â cup flour
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- Mix 1 cup of beer and flour together. Have extra beer? Well, that will help you get your courage to fry, add that to the chef. Add the baking powder, a bit of salt and cinnamon. Mix it all up and pour into a Ziplock bag.
- Throw the Ziplock bag in the fridge for a few hours.
- Mix equal parts beer and sugar into a small saucepan and put it over high heat to reduce it into a syrup.
- In a large, deep skillet, pour in enough vegetable oil to reach 1 inch. Heat to 375°F over medium-high heat.
- Grab the bag out of the fridge and unzip it a tiny bit. This allows you to squeeze the batter into the hot oil of your deep fryer, making a funnel cake.
- Let the batter create either a tight or freeform spiral in the hot oil fry until light brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Pour some syrup over the top. Dust with powdered sugar.

Ah funnel cake…brings me back to my Ocean City, NJ boardwalk days back in high school. Of course there wasn’t beer in the batter then…awesome addition!
I haven’t had funnel cake in ages. Seeing this one with beer and the extra syrup on top (usually just powdered sugar) is making me crave it.

I don’t think I ever had funnel cake before, but I bet if you made some for me I would have no problem devouring it.
