Today we headed down the coast (non locals, about 2 hours) to Monterey to hit up the aquarium. We tried this years before on an early anniversary but we got there quite late and didn’t make it into the aquarium. Our goals were to not eat at The Whaling Station (again) and to actually get into the aquarium. Done and done!
We rolled into Monterey around lunch, after sitting in Santa Cruz traffic. Hey, we knew it was coming. A nice weekend was upon us and everyone wanted to hit up the beach or boardwalk. Anyway, ended up parking by a cool little veg friendly cafe called Tillie Gorts (beware of the freaking music if you click, grr). I had a pretty good tofu scramble and they offered me Bragg’s at the table. Hippies. So considerate.
Then we walked down the street to see the fishies. The area was really nice. I think like everyone we were hoping for more big fish (like sharks) but there were a few hammerhead and other sharks. It was still really well put together and the volunteers were very into helping everyone so they got their best experience.
The husband’s favourite? Penguins. Duh. Last time we were in Monterey (those many moons ago) he bought a stuffed penguin that has been his office mascot ever since. Of course, he couldn’t remember where he got it until we were walking down Cannery Row. Go figure. The penguins were boss anyway. I’m assuming they were plotting their escape tonight.
I loved the jellyfish. The exhibit was pretty awesome. I wasn’t a huge fan of the seahorses, I found them creepy. Unfortunately, even after only about 2 hours (if that) of staring at things through the magnified glass and such it really brought on really bad headache. My eyes don’t focus that well quickly and with all the light changes I was having issues. We were about done anyway and headed up for a nice leisurely coastal drive.
Just got in right now and think I’ll chill on the couch. Looking forward to our real anniversary on Monday. I have to work but I will probably leave early. It was just nice to do something different this weekend, and day trips are pretty darn easy.
