I got off of the waiting list and onto the Local Harvest CSA this week. I’m super excited. The vast majority is local (remember I’m trying to eat more local?) and fresh and wonderful. What is pretty darn cool abou this CSA is that there is a protein in the share, and you have your choice of veg or omni. Nice! This is what I got:
2 Organic Onions
2 Organic Grapefruit
1 package pea shoots Claverach Farms, Eureka, MO
1 bunch turnips Silent Oaks, Opdyke, IL
1 bunch beets (mixed varieties) Doublestar Farms, Bluford, IL
1/2 lb shiitake mushrooms Ozark Forest Mushrooms, Missouri
Vegetarian Meat Loaf (4 servings)
1 pkg Tea Traveling Tea, Maplewood, MO
1 2lb package Martin Rice Martin Rice, Bernie, MO
Double Chocolate Cookies, Cookies and Brownies, Inc, St. Louis, MO
Yep! That’s pretty nice. We had the vegetarian meatloaf for dinner last night. It was pretty tasty. I didn’t realize there was local rice. Oh, and the cookies went to the husband. Double chocolate, but they have almond extract. Bummer.
I might have already cooked up the beets for a recipe and put out the tops for the bunnies. they have been trying their best to eat my phlax in the front yard, the husband saw a mama bunny eating for a few hours at one spot. There is so much snow that it really sucks for them. So yeah, starting a bad habit, but I’m just considering them my live compost bin. I still feel bad for not buying a bale of hay for them this year.
